Route selection uses three rules

  1. The leg has to be 36–68 km. Shorter, and the fixed cost of getting to the pad and through screening eats the whole advantage. Longer, and rail wins again.

  2. The ground has to be at least twice as slow. A sea, a border, or a bridge that always jams must sit in between — otherwise the line has no reason to exist.

  3. Both ends must already carry crowds. Border posts, airports, piers, industrial parks — we do not create demand, we take over an existing pain point.

Lines we deliberately cut

  • Shenzhen ↔ Zhongshan

The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link opened in 2024; the drive is 30 minutes. No advantage left.

  • Shenzhen ↔ Guangzhou

56 minutes on the high-speed line, 178 departures a day. Too frequent to beat.

  • Shenzhen ↔ Tangxia / Fenggang / Chang'an

Only 20–30 km — too close for the fixed overhead to pay off.

  • Futian ↔ West Kowloon

14 minutes by high-speed rail. This leg was never the painful one.
